CBD oil is 100% legal in the UK. And in just 3 minutes time, you'll have finished reading this article and be fully informed about the UK law.
You'll also be 3 minutes closer to a happier, healthier you.
LET'S BREAK DOWN SOME CBD OIL FACTS BEFORE WE GET STARTED
CBD is the abbreviated term for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is one of over 100 chemical compounds that naturally occur in the plant family known as Cannabaceae.
You'll probably be more familiar with a certain species of this plant known as cannabis. But this just scratches the surface of the story behind this amazing plant family. You see, cannabis is a specially-bred genus of Cannabaceae, cultivated for its recreational use.
It is specially bred because, over many plant generations, breeders have cultivated strains of the cannabis plant that contain higher (or lower) levels of a particular chemical compound known as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the chemical compound within the cannabis plant that gives you a 'high'.
This is probably why your first reaction when you hear CBD oil, which you instantly associate with as cannabis oil, is to wonder about the legality of it all.
And this is exactly where the confusion starts. You see, in UK law, any drug derived from the cannabis plant which contains any trace of the psychoactive compounds that are found in cannabis, such as THC, is considered to be a controlled substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
But this is also where it gets exciting.
CBD or cannabidiol is not a controlled substance because it does not contain more than the required 0.2% THC. This is also why CBD oil does not make you 'high'. In July 2018, the BBC covered this exact topic.
LEGAL CANNABIS PLANTS UK
As you learned above, cannabis is a genus of the family Cannabaceae and some species of it are bred purely for high THC content. On the other side of that family tree, you have Hemp.
Hemp is a genus of Cannibaceae that is typically bred for its industrial properties. It grows exceptionally quickly and was one of the first plants to be spun into usable fibre 10,000 years ago!
Now, although cannabis and industrial hemp both derive from the species Cannabis sativa and contain the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), they are completely different strains. Hemp has lower concentrations of THC and higher concentrations of CBD.
The legal CBD oil you buy in the UK usually comes from commercially grown hemp specifically bred for it's low (less than 0.2%) THC content and high CBD content.
This makes both hemp with these properties and CBD oil completely legal in the UK.
FORGET YOUR PRECONCEIVED IDEAS ABOUT CBD OIL LEGALITY
Since around 1925, there seems to have been an international effort to demonise cannabis. This is despite prior research conducted in the late 19th century by the UK Government that concluded that hemp-related drugs caused "little injury to society".
An important note here was that back in 1895, 'hemp' was the common name given to all varieties of the cannabis plant. An almost direct contrast to today's situation.
What has happened in our society since 1925 is that our language has evolved in a way that has seen the word 'cannabis' emerge (and replace hemp) as the overarching name for all plants from the cannabis sativa species. The result is that even industrial hemp, a non-psychoactive plant, is called 'cannabis' in the common tongue.
The constant demonisation of 'cannabis' in the media has further served to put an apparent veil of secrecy, or taboo, over the whole topic.
The result, of course, is that whenever you see, hear or read anything about cannabis, you immediately raise your preconceived 'conditioning shield' and hit reverse.
Here at Enhanced Biotics, we want to demystify the entire topic in the full spirit of the UK law because it is now undeniable that CBD Oil potentially many medicinal benefits. Benefits which even the World Health Organisation has started to recognise.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF LEGAL CBD OIL UK?
Well, let me tell you that the history of recorded medicinal benefits of CBD Oil goes way back. Way back before the word legal was ever invented!
The first known recorded use of cannabis as a medicinal plant is reported to take place in Asia, some 10,000 years ago. In truth, it probably dates back as far as man.
ANCIENT MEDICINAL USES
Evidence exists of ancient medicinal cannabis use in China, Egypt, India and the Ancient Greeks dating back thousands of years.
- Emperor Shen-Nung of China, wrote a book on treatment methods in 2737 BCE that included the medical benefits of cannabis. He recommended the substance for many ailments, including constipation, gout, rheumatism, and absent-mindedness.
- The Egyptians displayed knowledge of medicinal cannabis as far back as 1550 BCE too, mostly using it for pain relief.
- Ancient Indian texts also confirm it was used medicinally for a variety of illnesses and ailments, including insomnia, headaches, gastrointestinal disorders, and pain, including during childbirth.
- In the medieval Islamic world, Arabic physicians used it extensively as medication from the 8th to 18th centuries. They wrote that Cannabis sativa has diuretic, antiemetic, antiepileptic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties.
MODERN MEDICINAL USES
We are only now starting to see clinical trials emerge that, in the very modern sense, validate many of these ancient claims.
If we were to recommend two recent clinical studies for further reading, we would point you to the 2018 study into CBD's effectiveness in treating a form of epilepsy and the 2015 study, "Cannabidiol as a Potential Treatment for Anxiety Disorders". As well as https://file.scirp.org/pdf/PP_2015021016351567.pdf
These three studies validate some of the ancient claims and with such strong evidence beginning to emerge for many other treatments.
WHERE TO BUY LEGAL CBD OIL IN THE UK?
You can buy CBD Oil in the UK from a growing number of online retailers but you should proceed with caution. Due to the relatively new deregulation of CBD and it's reclassification as a medicine by the MHRA, many business owners are trying to get in on the action.
This is resulting in a lot of inferior products coming to market that purport to be 100% pure CBD oil when, in actual fact, they aren't. You should make sure you double-check any claims made by retailers by asking to see their lab test certificates.
At Enhanced Biotics, our legal CBD Oils are all independently tested and manufactured in the UK. You can find links to our test certificates on all of our product pages.
